Moscow authorities have arrested a 51-year-old American citizen, identified as Michael Travis Leake, on allegations of running a drug operation involving young people. Leake, a former member of the Russian rock band Lovi Noch, is accused of trafficking mephedrone, a substance with similar effects to cocaine and MDMA. He has resided in Russia for over a decade, initially working as an English teacher and assisting with song translations for Russian bands. A Moscow court ordered Leake to remain in custody until August 6th, 2023. The U.S. State Department has confirmed its awareness of the situation and is actively monitoring the case, promising to provide appropriate consular assistance. If convicted, Leake faces a potential prison sentence of up to 12 years.

This arrest comes amidst heightened tensions between the U.S. and Russia, following the detainment of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich earlier this year on espionage charges, which he and the Wall Street Journal deny. Gershkovich's detention was recently extended for another three months. Additionally, U.S. Marine veteran Paul Whelan remains imprisoned in Russia, serving a 16-year sentence on espionage charges.
