Barkley Prioritizes Playoffs Over Chasing Dickerson's Rushing Record

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley has confirmed he will sit out the final game of the season, forgoing a chance to surpass Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record. Barkley expressed his initial disappointment at missing the opportunity to etch his name in NFL history but ultimately emphasized his commitment to the team's playoff aspirations.

In a conversation with Head Coach Nick Sirianni following the Eagles' victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Barkley initially downplayed the significance of the record. However, after reflecting on the potential achievement, his perspective shifted. He acknowledged the rarity of such a chance but reiterated that team success takes precedence.

Barkley shared the situation with his family, who were reportedly even more eager for him to pursue the record. He lightheartedly mentioned his father's particularly strong reaction to the news of him sitting out. Despite their enthusiasm, Barkley remained resolute in his decision, prioritizing the team's playoff goals.

With 2,005 rushing yards this season, Barkley falls just short of Dickerson's 2,105-yard record set in 1984. While Dickerson achieved the feat with 379 carries, Barkley has managed his impressive total in only 345 attempts. Notably, Dickerson also played in fewer games than Barkley would have if he participated in the final game. Barkley's current contract with the Eagles stands as the most lucrative running back deal in franchise history.
