Almost 25 years after his dramatic resignation from the New York Jets, Bill Belichick apparently contemplated a return. In 2000, Belichick was poised to become the Jets' head coach, but famously resigned during his introductory press conference, citing ownership concerns. He subsequently joined the New England Patriots, becoming a long-time rival of the Jets.

Now, Belichick is the head coach at UNC, but reports suggest this decision followed informal discussions between his representatives and several NFL teams, including the Jets. These talks occurred shortly before he accepted the UNC position. No formal offers were made, and the opportunity at UNC materialized.
The Jets, struggling with a 1-7 record since firing Robert Saleh, were a potential landing spot. Online speculation also linked Belichick to the New York Giants, where he had previous success as defensive coordinator. However, concerns about Jets owner Woody Johnson, who remains in that position, may have influenced Belichick's decision. Belichick previously served as the Jets' defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells.

Despite the NFL interest, Belichick has affirmed his commitment to UNC, stating he "didn't come here to leave."
