California Wildfires: Firefighters Make Progress Against Rabbit Fire Amidst Heatwave

Firefighters in Southern California are making headway against the Rabbit Fire and three smaller blazes amidst a persistent heatwave. The Rabbit Fire, burning approximately 65 miles southeast of Los Angeles, has seen containment increase to 35%, despite growing slightly to over 12 square miles. While the fire continues to pose a threat to over 150 structures, thankfully, none have been reported damaged so far. The cause of the fire, which ignited last Friday afternoon, is currently under investigation.

Elsewhere in the region, three smaller wildfires are also showing significant progress towards containment, offering some relief amid excessive heat warnings that remain in effect. In the Sierra Nevada, the Pika Fire, sparked by lightning in Yosemite National Park last month, has expanded slightly to over a square mile. Smoke from this fire has been impacting air quality in Yosemite Valley, particularly during the overnight and morning hours.

While the heatwave continues to bring challenging conditions to inland areas of southern and central California, much of the northern part of the state has been spared from extreme heat warnings.
