Actor Benedict Cumberbatch has publicly acknowledged his regret for portraying a non-binary character, named All, in the 2016 comedy film *Zoolander 2*. The role, intended as comedic, drew criticism for its portrayal of non-binary individuals.
In the film, Cumberbatch's character's androgynous appearance prompts questions from the main characters, played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, about their gender identity. The ensuing dialogue, filled with awkward exchanges and misinterpretations, sparked controversy and led to a petition calling for a boycott of the film.

Cumberbatch, in a recent interview, expressed remorse for the role, stating that he has apologized for it numerous times and acknowledges the misunderstanding and upset it caused. He recognized the changing cultural landscape and stated that in the present day, such a role should be played by a transgender actor. He reflected on his initial intention, which was to satirize the lack of understanding of a diverse world by two stereotypical characters, but admitted that the execution backfired.

At the time of the film's release, a petition garnered thousands of signatures, criticizing the portrayal as a harmful caricature of non-binary individuals and suggesting the filmmakers could have engaged actual non-binary models for a more authentic representation. Cumberbatch himself later acknowledged this, stating that the role should have been played by a trans actor.
