Democrats Decry Trump's Tariffs After Supporting Biden-Era Tax Hikes

Despite previously supporting tax increases during the Biden administration, Democratic lawmakers are now criticizing President Trump's newly implemented tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China. Trump signed an executive order on Saturday imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, citing a campaign promise to combat drug trafficking. While the Mexico tariff is temporarily paused, the tariffs on Canada and China are set to begin, prompting concern from Democrats about rising costs for consumers.

Several Democratic senators and representatives have voiced their opposition, arguing the tariffs will increase prices on everyday goods. Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) stated the tariffs will exacerbate the existing high cost of living, while Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) estimated a potential cost of $1,200 per year for the average family. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) attributed the potential economic and national security consequences directly to President Trump.

Schumer talks to media

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) criticized the tariffs, expressing concern over increased costs for consumers and advocating for focusing on competitors like China instead of allies. This criticism comes despite Democrats' previous support for tax hikes proposed by former President Biden, including increases on corporations, small businesses, personal income, and energy. When gas prices surged under Biden, Schumer attributed the rise to price gouging by oil companies rather than government policies.

A group of 42 lawmakers, including Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ), have urged Trump to rescind the tariffs on Canada and Mexico, arguing they will harm American workers and businesses. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) echoed this sentiment, claiming the tariffs will give overseas competitors an advantage.

Trump thumbs up

Despite the backlash, Trump defended the tariffs, claiming Canada has engaged in abusive trade practices against the U.S.
