A former detention officer at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia is facing serious legal consequences following accusations of assaulting inmates and falsifying reports. Demarcus Whatley, 25, has been charged with a range of felonies, including aggravated assault, cruelty to inmates, violation of oath by a public officer, false statements and writings, and reckless conduct. He is currently incarcerated without bond.
The investigation into Whatley began after an inmate filed an emergency grievance. A review of security footage reportedly revealed that Whatley used excessive force against three inmates during an incident. Sheriff Patrick Labat emphasized the importance of treating inmates humanely and respectfully, stating that officers who violate this duty will be held accountable. Whatley's employment with the sheriff's office was terminated following the investigation. He had been employed since March 1.

This incident is the latest in a string of misconduct allegations against Fulton County Jail officers in recent months. In early June, Detention Officer Monique Clark was arrested for allegedly choking a detainee into unconsciousness. In March, Detention Officer Kawana Jenkins was arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. And in February, Detention Officer Reynard Trotman was arrested for allegedly assaulting an inmate. All officers involved in these incidents have been fired.

These incidents raise concerns about the safety and well-being of inmates at the Fulton County Jail. The repeated nature of these allegations suggests a potential systemic issue within the facility. The sheriff's office has emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing these issues.
