Prior to her disappearance, Kobayashi sent unusual messages to loved ones, mentioning financial troubles and a "spiritual awakening." These messages raised concerns among her family and friends, who described them as out of character. Her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, had been acting as a family spokesperson and expressed continued worry even after authorities confirmed Kobayashi's entry into Mexico. Pidgeon had questioned the allocation of funds raised during the search and planned to travel to Mexico herself to ensure Kobayashi's well-being.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell previously stated that evidence pointed to Kobayashi entering Mexico voluntarily, with no signs of foul play. During the search, Kobayashi's father tragically died by suicide. Reports also surfaced suggesting Kobayashi's involvement in an immigration scheme, although her family's attorney emphasized the lack of confirmed information regarding these claims.
