Baseball icon Johnny Bench has issued an apology following an insensitive comment made during the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday. The event honored the late Gabe Paul, and Bench's remark came after Jennie Paul, Gabe's daughter, mentioned her father's Jewish heritage and advocacy for minorities in baseball.
Following Jennie Paul's comment about her father's frugality, Bench was overheard saying, "He was Jewish!" The remark drew criticism, prompting Bench to issue an apology through the Reds.
In his statement, Bench acknowledged the insensitivity of his comment and apologized to Jennie Paul for detracting from the recognition her father deserved. He emphasized Gabe Paul's rightful place in the Reds Hall of Fame and expressed regret that his remark diverted attention from the occasion.
Jennie Paul stated that she did not hear Bench's comment at the time. She clarified that she is not Jewish but was raised Episcopalian. She also noted that Gabe Paul’s parents originated from modern-day Ukraine, which was part of Russia during their time.
