A Georgia-based physicians organization has publicly challenged the Macon Bacon, a collegiate summer baseball team, over its name and menu offerings. The Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine placed a billboard along Interstate 16 urging fans to "keep bacon off your plate." They also sent a letter to team president Brandon Raphael, arguing that the team's name glorifies processed meat, which is linked to increased risks of colorectal cancer and other health issues.

The physicians group cited statistics indicating that even a few slices of bacon per week can significantly elevate the risk of colorectal cancer. Their letter also pointed out several bacon-heavy items on the team's menu, such as "Bacon Wrapped Bacon" and "Bacon Loaded Cheese Fries," urging the team to promote healthier plant-based alternatives instead. They even suggested renaming the team to "Macon Facon Bacon" and changing the mascot, Kevin, to represent a plant-based bacon alternative.

Raphael responded to the criticism, stating that the Macon Bacon organization aims to provide family-friendly entertainment and bring the community together. He emphasized that the team name, chosen by fans, is meant to be lighthearted and fun. While acknowledging the bacon-themed menu items, Raphael pointed out that the concessions also offer a variety of other options, including plant-based choices, a fact he felt the physicians group overlooked. He firmly stated that the team will not consider a name change.

The Macon Bacon, founded in 2017, compete in the Coastal Plain League. The team name was selected by fans over alternative suggestions like the Macon Soul, Macon Hits, and Macon Noise. They won the league championship in 2020.
