Following a disappointing performance at the Genesis Invitational, Rory McIlroy found himself defending his caddie, Harry Diamond, against a critical spectator. McIlroy's putting struggles contributed to his T-17th finish at 3-under par. Golf reporter Dan Rapoport reported that after McIlroy missed a 12-foot birdie putt, a fan shouted, "Blame your caddie." McIlroy's response, according to Rapoport, was a sharp, "Shut the f--- up."

Diamond, who has caddied for McIlroy since 2017, shares a long-standing friendship with the golfer. Saturday proved particularly challenging for McIlroy, as he ranked last in shots gained putting. This difficulty with putting has been a recurring issue since his setback at the 2024 U.S. Open, where missed putts cost him a potential victory. The incident at the U.S. Open sparked criticism of Diamond's input on putts and club selections, which McIlroy addressed in a post-tournament interview. He defended Diamond, highlighting their shared successes, including wins at Dubai, Quail Hollow, two FedEx Cups, and two Ryder Cups.

McIlroy emphasized the unfairness of the criticism directed at Diamond, pointing out the lack of acknowledgment for Diamond's contributions during his victories. Earlier this year, McIlroy secured a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, finishing 21-under par and earning $3.6 million.
