A Michigan couple tragically lost their lives in two unrelated incidents between Christmas and New Year's Day. Scott Levitan, 66, and his wife, Mary Lou Levitan, also 66, were residents of Livonia, a Detroit suburb.
The initial incident occurred on December 26th when Scott Levitan was ice fishing with his 15-year-old grandson on Lake George in Addison Township. While drilling a hole in the ice, the ice gave way, plunging Scott into the frigid water. His grandson bravely attempted a rescue but also fell in. A nearby resident witnessed the event and used kayaks to pull the teenager to safety and keep Scott's head above water until emergency services arrived. The grandson received treatment for his injuries.

The following day, as Mary Lou was en route to retrieve her husband's vehicle, tragedy struck again. A 19-year-old driver crossed the center line on an Oakland Township road, colliding with the car in which Mary Lou was a passenger. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Scott Levitan remained on life support until December 31st.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard described the events as an "unspeakable tragedy" and offered condolences to the Levitan family.
