Prosecutors are attempting to uphold an involuntary manslaughter charge against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the film "Rust," alleging she distributed cocaine on the day of the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. A key argument in Tuesday's hearing revolves around a witness, whose identity remains undisclosed, who will reportedly testify that Gutierrez-Reed gave them the drug. The defense aims to have the drug charge dismissed. Special prosecutors contend that Gutierrez-Reed's alleged transfer of cocaine was an attempt to obstruct the collection of evidence related to the firearm involved in the October 21, 2021 incident.
Gutierrez-Reed's legal team, led by Jason Bowles, criticizes the emergence of this witness after 20 months, questioning the timing and lack of corroborating evidence. Bowles has previously labeled the drug allegation as "retaliatory and vindictive," highlighting the lack of prior notice or supporting evidence. He also points to the recent departure of the lead investigator and concerns raised about the investigation itself.

These new charges against Gutierrez-Reed follow the dismissal of involuntary manslaughter charges against actor Alec Baldwin, who was holding the gun when it discharged. Special prosecutors dropped the charges against Baldwin in April due to "new facts" requiring further investigation. This investigation, however, remains open, leaving the possibility of future charges. Baldwin still faces several lawsuits, including one from "Rust" script supervisor Mamie Mitchell and another from Hutchins' family, represented by attorney Gloria Allred. Allred emphasizes their commitment to holding Baldwin accountable for his role in the tragedy.
