The mayor of McColl, South Carolina, George Garner II, tragically passed away in a car accident on Tuesday. The 49-year-old's death came just days after the entire police force of his town resigned. Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee confirmed that Garner died in a head-on collision with a truck in Mechanicsville. A Marlboro County deputy was reportedly pursuing Garner's vehicle at the time of the crash, though the pursuit was described as an attempt to ensure Garner's well-being, not related to any law violation. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has confirmed an ongoing investigation involving Garner, but details remain scarce.

Garner's death follows the mass resignation of McColl's police department the previous week. Former Police Chief Bob Hale cited "repeated acts of harassment" and a "hostile work environment" created by a town council member as the reason for his and his officers' departure. Hale's statement also alleged budget cuts and unmet needs within the department. The town of McColl, with a population of around 2,000, was left without local law enforcement, relying on the Marlboro County Sheriff's Department for coverage. Marlboro County Emergency Management/911 issued a statement mourning Garner's loss, describing him as a respected figure known for his kindness and warmth.
