New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu is emerging as a key figure in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. His recent interactions with candidates highlight his significant influence in the Granite State, which holds the first primary in the nation.
A humorous exchange between Sununu and presidential hopeful Nikki Haley at a recent GOP fundraiser underscored his pivotal role. While introducing Haley, Sununu offered praise but stopped short of an endorsement, emphasizing the length of time remaining before the primary. Haley, in a lighthearted response, jokingly urged Sununu to endorse her immediately to avoid undue stress. The playful banter masked a serious underlying objective: securing Sununu's coveted support.

Haley is not alone in seeking Sununu's favor. Several other candidates, including former Vice President Mike Pence, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, former Congressman Will Hurd, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have met with Sununu in recent weeks. Senators Tim Scott and former Governors Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson also conferred with him earlier this year. This underscores Sununu's perceived importance in navigating the New Hampshire political landscape.

Political analysts agree on Sununu’s significant influence. Neil Levesque, a veteran political observer in New Hampshire, described Sununu’s endorsement and role as a primary ambassador as “critically important.” Sununu himself downplays his influence, stating his willingness to offer advice and guidance to all candidates on how to connect with New Hampshire voters. He emphasized the importance of “retail politics,” engaging directly with citizens in informal settings like backyard barbecues and diners.

While Sununu has expressed openness to endorsing a candidate, he has not set a timeline. He noted the early stage of the race and the ongoing entry of new contenders. Notably absent from Sununu's consultations is former President Donald Trump, a frequent target of Sununu's criticism. Sununu has questioned Trump’s viability as a candidate in the general election.

As for his own political future, Sununu remains undecided about seeking an unprecedented fifth term as governor, indicating a decision will be made in consultation with his family in the coming weeks.
