The Chosen's Success Amidst Declining Religious Importance in America

Dallas Jenkins, the creative force behind the widely popular biblical series "The Chosen," recently addressed the declining significance of religion in America, according to a recent poll. In a conversation with Martha MacCallum on "The Story," Jenkins reflected on the substantial drop in religious importance observed over the past 25 years.

While acknowledging the poll's findings, Jenkins offered a nuanced perspective. "People are increasingly disengaging from organized religion and faith, but I believe their hearts still yearn for something greater than themselves," he stated.

The National Opinion Research Center (NORC) poll, commissioned by the Wall Street Journal, revealed a significant shift in religious importance among Americans. Only 39% of respondents in 2023 considered religion "very important," a stark contrast to the 62% who held that view in 1998.

Jenkins highlighted the global success of "The Chosen," which has captivated millions since its 2017 debut. He emphasized the transformative impact the series has had on viewers, particularly those disillusioned by negative experiences with organized religion or its media portrayal.

Many viewers, Jenkins explained, express a renewed understanding of faith as a personal relationship with Jesus, distinct from the often rigid or negative perceptions of religious institutions. This resonated with the poll's findings, suggesting a potential disconnect between personal spirituality and formal religious affiliation.

Jenkins believes "The Chosen" emerged, in part, as a response to this growing spiritual hunger and the declining relevance of traditional religious structures. By presenting the gospels through the eyes of those who knew Jesus, the series offers a fresh and relatable perspective on faith.

"The Chosen" is available for streaming on Fox Nation.
