Tomiko Itooka, World's Oldest Person, Passes Away at 116

Tomiko Itooka, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person, passed away on December 29th at the age of 116. A city official from Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan, confirmed her passing. Ms. Itooka resided in a care facility in Ashiya at the time of her death.

Born on May 23, 1908, Ms. Itooka enjoyed simple pleasures like bananas and Calpis, a yogurt-flavored drink. She assumed the title of world's oldest person following the passing of 117-year-old Maria Branyas, as per the Gerontology Research Group. Upon learning of her distinction, she offered a humble "Thank you."

Last year's birthday celebration saw Ms. Itooka receiving flowers, a cake, and a card from the mayor. A native of Osaka, she was a high school volleyball player known for her energetic spirit and even climbed the 10,062-foot Mount Ontake twice.

Married at 20, she raised two daughters and two sons. During World War II, she managed her husband's textile factory office. After his passing in 1979, she resided independently in Nara. She is survived by a son, a daughter, and five grandchildren. A private funeral service was held with family and friends.

Following Ms. Itooka's passing, the title of world's oldest person now belongs to 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, born just 16 days after Ms. Itooka, according to the Gerontology Research Group.
