Woman Arrested for Alleged Looting in Palisades Fire Area While Wearing 'Palisades Strong' Shirt

In a bizarre twist, a woman was apprehended for allegedly looting a home affected by the devastating Palisades Fire while sporting a "Palisades Strong" t-shirt. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Southern Division reported the arrest of Karen Matsey on social media, sharing images of the ironic attire. Officers responded to a looting report in the Pacific Palisades on February 21st. While Matsey had fled the scene, the victim provided a description of her vehicle, leading to her arrest at her residence. Authorities discovered several allegedly stolen antiques inside her home. Matsey now faces grand theft charges.

CHP Southern Division Chief Chris Margaris expressed pride in his officers' swift action, emphasizing their commitment to aiding the community during this difficult time. This incident follows a string of looting arrests since the Palisades Fire began on January 7th. The Santa Monica Police Department reported 39 arrests in evacuation zones, with none of the suspects being local residents. The Los Angeles Police Department has also made 34 arrests, primarily for attempted burglary, curfew violations, and other offenses.

Residents told CHP officers they saw Karen Mastey allegedly looting homes in the Pacific Palisades.

Los Angeles Assistant Police Chief Blake Chow previously lamented the opportunistic crimes targeting evacuees already grappling with the aftermath of the fire, which damaged or destroyed over 10,000 structures. Authorities are restricting access to the area as residents begin the arduous process of cleanup and rebuilding.
