A family is raising concerns after their 12-year-old adopted daughter, Adaline Deal, was allegedly denied placement on the heart transplant list at Cincinnati Children's Hospital due to her lack of COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. Adaline, adopted from China, has two congenital heart conditions requiring a transplant. Her parents, Brayton and Jeneen Deal, say her health has deteriorated recently, necessitating the transplant.
Adaline's parents were reportedly informed by the hospital that these vaccinations are prerequisites for the transplant list. The family's request for a religious exemption was denied, citing hospital policy based on National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommendations. Stephanie Stock, president of Ohio Advocates for Medical Freedom, criticized the policy as discriminatory.
The Deals expressed their limited options and hope for a change in the hospital's decision. They emphasized their previous positive experiences with the hospital's treatment and the outpouring of support received since sharing their story. While awaiting a written denial, they have not yet engaged legal counsel.
Adaline, though cognitively delayed, is aware of the situation, offering comfort to her distressed mother. The family remains hopeful, expressing their faith and trust in God. Cincinnati Children's Hospital issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to science-based decisions and individualized care plans developed in collaboration with families.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support the family's expenses related to the transplant process.
