Acosta's Defense of Democrats' Abortion Stance Sparks Debate on CNN

CNN anchor Jim Acosta recently engaged in a heated exchange with The Family Leader CEO Bob Vander Plaat regarding the Democratic Party's position on abortion. Vander Plaat asserted that Democrats support abortion up until birth, a claim Acosta refuted. The debate unfolded on "CNN Newsroom" during a discussion about the role of abortion in the 2024 presidential election.

Vander Plaat criticized what he described as the "extreme position" of prominent Democrats like Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, alleging their support for unrestricted, government-funded abortions. Acosta interjected, denying that Democrats advocate for abortion until birth.

The discussion continued with Acosta referencing Biden's stated position aligning with Roe v. Wade. However, Vander Plaat pressed the issue, highlighting the tendency of many Democrats to avoid directly answering questions about abortion restrictions, often deferring to a woman's right to choose in consultation with her doctor. He also mentioned the Senate Democrats' previous vote on a bill that would have legalized abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

The conversation also touched on California's state budget, which includes an "Abortion Practical Support Fund" to aid women seeking abortions with travel and related expenses. This fund, supported by Governor Newsom, further fueled the debate about the extent of Democratic support for abortion access.

Acosta and Vander Plaat also clashed over public opinion on abortion. Vander Plaat argued that America is becoming increasingly pro-life, citing the belief that a fetus with a separate DNA and heartbeat constitutes a baby. Acosta challenged this assertion, pointing to polls indicating widespread disagreement with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

A Fox News poll was referenced, showing a combined 56% of respondents believing abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 43% felt it should be illegal except in specific circumstances or entirely. The discussion also included President Biden's previous remarks suggesting a need for "negotiation" regarding abortions in the final trimester of pregnancy, except when the mother's health is at risk.

This exchange between Acosta and Vander Plaat underscores the ongoing and often contentious debate surrounding abortion rights in the United States, particularly as the 2024 election approaches.
