AP's Recognition of Transgender Boxer Sparks Controversy

The Associated Press's (AP) selection of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif as one of the top female athletes of 2024 has ignited significant debate. Khelif, who competed in the women's division at the Paris Olympics despite previously failing gender eligibility tests, won a gold medal, sparking international criticism of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Riley Gaines, a prominent advocate for women's sports and host of the "Gaines for Girls" podcast, expressed her strong disapproval on Fox & Friends. Gaines highlighted the fact that Khelif had been disqualified from prior competitions due to failing a chromosomal sex test, yet was allowed to compete in the Olympics. Leaked medical information further revealed Khelif's male biology, information Gaines asserts the IOC possessed prior to the games.

The AP's decision drew immediate backlash, including from tennis legend Martina Navratilova. Gaines criticized the IOC for knowingly jeopardizing the safety of female athletes by allowing them to compete against a biological male with knockout power. She further contended that the decision to honor Khelif sends a message that women who speak out against such policies will face consequences.

Gaines argued that organizations like the IOC prioritize financial interests over fairness and safety, and suggested female athletes should consider legal action against the IOC for knowingly placing them in harm's way. She emphasized the need to hold these organizations accountable financially.
