Zelenskyy Voices Concerns Over US-Russia Talks Excluding Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed apprehension regarding potential direct negotiations between the United States and Russia concerning the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine's inclusion in any discussions about its future. In a recent interview, Zelenskyy cautioned against the dangers of excluding Ukraine, suggesting such a move could set a concerning precedent for international relations and embolden other nations considering similar actions.

Zelenskyy's remarks come as former President Donald Trump indicated that discussions with Moscow were already underway and progressing positively. While Trump remained vague about the specifics of these talks, his special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, affirmed that efforts were being made to resolve the conflict, citing U.S. national security interests. Kellogg underscored the substantial financial commitment from the United States, exceeding $174 billion, and the evolving geopolitical landscape involving alliances between Russia, North Korea, China, and Iran.

While the U.S. has pledged significant military aid to Ukraine, Zelenskyy revealed that the actual amount received is considerably less than initially promised. He estimated that Kyiv has received approximately $75 billion in military support, raising questions about the allocation of the remaining funds. Kellogg expressed confidence in Trump's ability to navigate the complexities of the negotiations, highlighting his understanding of applying pressure strategically and creating leverage with both Ukraine and Russia.

Zelenskyy suggested potential leverage points for Trump, including increased sanctions on Russia's energy and banking sectors. He also advocated for Ukraine's inclusion in NATO, viewing it as a cost-effective security measure for allies. However, this move remains a point of contention with Russia, as Putin has warned of potential nuclear escalation if Ukraine joins the alliance.
