Bangkok Elevated Road Collapse Claims Two Lives, Injuring Eleven

Tragedy struck in Bangkok on Monday evening as an under-construction elevated road crumbled, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuries to eleven others. The incident, which occurred on the western side of the city, involved a sudden collapse of a metal support structure, sending concrete slabs plummeting to the ground.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipan confirmed the fatalities in a press conference on Tuesday, stating one individual perished at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. Rescue operations have ensured no one remains trapped beneath the debris, though the extensive cleanup is projected to span several days.

Captured video footage reveals the horrifying moment of the collapse, showcasing the blue metal framework giving way, precipitating the catastrophic downfall of the entire structure. The elevated road project, initiated in 2020, was contracted to Tharawan Construction and Npa Construction by Bangkok authorities.

Expressing his dismay, Governor Sittipan emphasized the avoidable nature of the disaster, demanding accountability for the loss of life. This incident follows a similar occurrence earlier this year in Bangkok, where a falling concrete slab from an elevated road construction site resulted in one fatality and damage to four vehicles. In that instance, the failure of a lifting frame led to the concrete section's descent. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of this latest collapse.
