The sermon delivered by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde at the National Prayer Service following President Donald Trump's inauguration has ignited a firestorm of criticism. Budde, the first woman to serve as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, used her platform to address LGBTQ+ rights and immigration, leading to accusations of politicizing the event.

Conservative figures and media outlets expressed outrage, accusing Budde of "weaponizing" the pulpit and blindsiding the President and Vice President JD Vance, who were in attendance with their families. Critics argued that the service, a tradition dating back to 1933, should have focused on unity rather than political issues.
During her sermon, Budde spoke of LGBTQ+ youth who "fear for their lives" and undocumented immigrants who contribute to American society. She called for mercy and compassion, referencing those who work in agriculture, cleaning services, and healthcare. Trump and Vance reportedly appeared displeased by her remarks.

Pastor Jack Brewer, a former NFL player, framed the sermon as part of a broader Democratic strategy to "race bait America" and push a "woke" agenda. Pastor Rob Pacienza criticized Budde for promoting a "secular worldview" and deviating from biblical truth. Pastor Corey Brooks questioned Budde's silence on similar issues during the previous administration.

The controversy extended to social media, with many echoing the sentiments expressed by the pastors. Country music artist John Rich responded by quoting scripture. Trump himself demanded an apology from Budde, calling her "nasty" and accusing her of being a "Radical Left hard line Trump hater."

Budde later clarified on CNN that her message was intended for both the President and the wider audience, emphasizing the humanity of those she mentioned.
