CNN's Post-Licht Era: A Return to Anti-Trump Programming?

Following the departure of CEO Chris Licht, CNN's coverage of Donald Trump's federal indictment suggests a shift back towards the network's prior approach under Jeff Zucker. This has sparked discussion about whether CNN is reverting to a more partisan stance.

Licht's goal was to move away from what some perceived as excessive partisanship during Zucker's tenure. However, his attempts were met with internal resistance, particularly after the controversial Trump town hall. This ultimately led to his dismissal after just over a year.

Several incidents highlight this apparent shift. Jake Tapper, a vocal critic of Licht, publicly stated concerns about airing Trump's post-hearing remarks live, citing potential inaccuracies and dangerous rhetoric. He also expressed disapproval to producers for showing footage of Trump interacting with supporters, labeling it a campaign spectacle.

CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy, known for his criticism of right-wing media, also weighed in. He contrasted the network's decision not to air Trump's recent speech with its coverage of Trump's post-arraignment speech in New York, which was aired under Licht's leadership. Darcy had previously clashed with Licht over the Trump town hall, criticizing it as a platform for misinformation.

With CNN currently led by interim executives from the Zucker era, the network's coverage is being closely watched. During the unaired speech, Trump characterized the indictment as politically motivated election interference and a severe abuse of power. He also attacked Special Counsel Jack Smith and President Biden.
