The recent opening of the college football transfer portal, coinciding with the College Football Playoff, has drawn criticism from coaches who believe the timing puts undue pressure on players. SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee voiced his concerns, calling the situation "terrible" and expressing sympathy for players facing difficult decisions. He highlighted the unique challenge of in-season "free agency" in college football, contrasting it with other sports.

Lashlee specifically referenced the predicament of Penn State's backup quarterback, who felt compelled to enter the portal despite the team's playoff run. He argued against having a transfer portal open in December, suggesting a move to the spring would alleviate the pressure on players. He emphasized that players shouldn't be forced to choose between transferring and participating in crucial games like the playoffs or bowl games.

While supportive of NIL compensation and player movement, Lashlee acknowledged the complexities the current system creates, even citing his own backup quarterback's decision to enter the portal while remaining with the team for the playoff run. He described managing this situation as a "juggling act."

SMU is scheduled to play Penn State in the upcoming playoff game. The winner will advance to face Boise State.
