Representative Pramila Jayapal, the head of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, ignited a firestorm of criticism after labeling Israel a "racist state" during the Netroots Nation Conference in Chicago. Her remarks, made in response to pro-Palestinian protestors, drew condemnation from across the political spectrum.
Jayapal stated, "We have been fighting to make it clear that Israel is a racist state…that the Palestinian people deserve self-determination and autonomy." She further criticized those attempting to prevent her and the Progressive Caucus from taking such stances.

Critics swiftly responded to Jayapal's comments. Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, called the statement "disgraceful," highlighting Israeli protests in defense of democracy. Others, like New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, accused Jayapal of extremism, while Senator Rick Scott deemed her words "despicable."

Jayapal's comments come as several "Squad" members announced a boycott of Israeli President Isaac Herzog's address to Congress. Representative Ilhan Omar justified her boycott by citing Israel's past denial of entry to her and Representative Rashida Tlaib. Journalist Karmel Melamed found Jayapal's characterization of Israel as "racist" shocking, comparing it to rhetoric from the Iranian regime.

Following the backlash, Jayapal issued a clarifying statement, asserting that she does not believe Israel's existence is inherently racist. However, she maintained her criticism of the current Israeli government's policies, which she described as "outright racist," specifically citing settlement expansion as an obstacle to a two-state solution. She reiterated her commitment to a two-state solution ensuring freedom and self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians.
