In a disheartening turn of events for the Detroit Tigers, starting pitcher Matthew Boyd and reliever Will Vest both exited Monday night's game against the Texas Rangers due to injuries. Boyd left after just 15 pitches with left elbow discomfort, while Vest followed suit an inning later with right knee discomfort.
Boyd's departure came after a brief consultation with the trainer and manager A.J. Hinch. The concerning moment occurred after Boyd, having already surrendered a leadoff home run to Marcus Semien, struck out Corey Seager and Josh Jung. He then reached a 2-0 count on Adolis Garcia, but after throwing a pitch over the catcher's head, Boyd signaled for the trainer. Vest entered the game and promptly struck out Garcia to end the first inning.
Vest's appearance was equally short-lived. After giving up a leadoff double in the second and striking out two batters, he landed awkwardly after a pitch to Ezequiel Duran. The trainer and Hinch returned to the mound, and Vest, clearly in discomfort, attempted a warm-up pitch before being replaced by Mason Englert, who finished the inning with a strikeout.
These injuries add to the Tigers' growing list of pitching woes, as they currently have nine pitchers on the injured list.
