Escapee Michael Burham, Deemed Dangerous, Believed to be Hiding in Pennsylvania Woods

A widespread search is underway for Michael Burham, 34, who escaped from the Warren County jail late Thursday. He's considered highly dangerous and is a suspect in a homicide investigation. Authorities believe Burham, who escaped using exercise equipment and bedsheets to climb out a window, is still in the vicinity of Warren, Pennsylvania. He was being held on $1 million bail for kidnapping, burglary, and other charges.

The Pennsylvania State Police have discovered what appear to be small stockpiles and campsites in the forested areas near Warren. Lt. Col. George Bivens indicated these sites may be connected to Burham. Warren police have also stated that Burham was involved in a carjacking and kidnapping of a local couple during a previous attempt to evade capture.

The search involves local, state, and federal authorities, and encompasses residential areas, abandoned buildings, and wooded terrain. K-9 units, drones, and aircraft are being utilized. While authorities currently believe Burham remains in the area, Lt. Col. Bivens stated they are continually reassessing this assumption.

Burham reportedly has "self-taught survival training" along with military reserve experience. The search area is extensive and challenging, with numerous cabins and outbuildings that could provide hiding places. Authorities are also investigating the possibility that Burham may be receiving assistance from someone.

Due to the ongoing manhunt, the city of Warren has closed its playground program, and the county school district has canceled all summer activities at Beaty Warren Middle School. Residents are urged to be cautious, secure their homes, and avoid leaving out anything that could aid Burham, such as food, clothing, vehicles, or weapons.

Rewards totaling $9,500 are being offered for information leading to Burham's capture. Law enforcement is applying pressure with the hope that Burham’s increasing desperation will work to their advantage. Sheriff Brian Zeybel acknowledges that while Burham may not be a “master” survivalist, he likely has a higher tolerance for discomfort than the average person. He reiterated the importance of community members taking precautions to ensure their safety and prevent Burham from obtaining any resources or shelter.
