Candace Kanavel, a Tempe police officer, has achieved a remarkable feat, winning the Miss Arizona USA crown. She aims to use her platform to connect law enforcement with the community and inspire women across the nation. Kanavel believes that fostering empathy and understanding between officers and the public is crucial to bridging the divide.
Speaking on "America's Newsroom," Kanavel emphasized the importance of seeing beyond the uniform and recognizing the shared humanity between law enforcement and the communities they serve. "We all have families, hobbies, and lives outside of work," she explained. "By connecting on a personal level, we can build stronger relationships and break down barriers."
Kanavel's journey to Miss Arizona USA was a long one, spanning 11 years and six previous attempts at the title. Her inspiration, ironically, came while volunteering at a "Shop with a Cop" event. Seeing a titleholder sparked a dream, which, years later, intertwined with her career in law enforcement.

Her interest in policing stemmed from a college criminal justice course taught by a former Phoenix police officer. This led to a civilian role at the Tempe Police Department, where she witnessed firsthand the positive impact officers can have. The department expressed immense pride in Kanavel's accomplishment, highlighting her dedication and hard work.
Acknowledging the growing tension between law enforcement and the public, Kanavel sees her title as an opportunity to humanize officers. She wants people to understand that behind the badge are individuals with passions and interests just like everyone else.
Beyond community relations, Kanavel is passionate about empowering women. Her "Yes, she can" initiative focuses on building confidence and equipping women with essential skills like self-defense and situational awareness. She has already trained over 200 women in these areas, drawing on her own professional training.

Kanavel believes her unique combination of roles serves as a powerful message to young women. "I want them to see that they can pursue multiple passions and achieve success in seemingly different fields," she stated. "Being both a pageant queen and a police officer demonstrates that the possibilities are limitless."
