While Mississippians grappled with the aftermath of devastating tornadoes, power outages, and storm damage, Governor Tate Reeves found himself at the center of controversy for attending a Republican fundraising event in neighboring Alabama. The back-to-back tornadoes, which claimed one life, injured dozens, and caused widespread destruction, left communities reeling, yet the governor's presence at the out-of-state event drew sharp criticism.
The Republican Governors Association fundraiser, held at Birmingham's Grand Bohemian Hotel, featured Governor Reeves and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey as headliners. Ticket prices for the event ranged from $5,000 to $50,000, raising questions about the governor's priorities in the wake of the natural disaster.
Reeves' campaign manager, Elliott Husbands, defended the governor's attendance, stating that the event was planned well in advance and that the funds raised were not specifically designated for any particular campaign. He emphasized that Reeves, who is the RGA's policy chairperson and seeking re-election, remained in constant contact with Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials throughout the storm and during his brief trip to Alabama. Husbands also noted the governor's direct communication with local leaders in the affected areas and his public commitment to visit the impacted regions.
However, the governor's actions did not escape the scrutiny of his political opponents. Democratic gubernatorial nominee Brandon Presley's campaign communications director, Michael Beyer, condemned Reeves' decision to attend the fundraiser, accusing him of prioritizing political connections and fundraising over the immediate needs of his constituents. Beyer argued that Reeves consistently prioritizes personal gain over the well-being of Mississippians affected by the storm.
Despite the criticism, Reeves took to social media to affirm his commitment to supporting the affected communities and assisting in their recovery. He reiterated his pledge to be present in the impacted areas. His campaign manager clarified that the governor did not utilize the state airplane for travel to the fundraiser.
As thousands of residents endured the sweltering heat without power, the storms continued to wreak havoc across the state. A tornado in Jasper County resulted in one fatality, nearly two dozen injuries, and damage to over 70 homes. Another tornado impacted coastal Jackson County, injuring six and damaging approximately 100 structures, with Moss Point bearing the brunt of the devastation.
