Kirk Cameron Challenges American Library Association Over Alleged Discrimination

Celebrated children's author and actor Kirk Cameron is partnering with First Liberty Institute, a Christian legal organization, to address what he perceives as discriminatory practices by the American Library Association (ALA). Cameron alleges that the ALA is actively discouraging libraries from hosting his upcoming nationwide story hour event scheduled for August 5th. He claims the ALA's actions are motivated by bias against his faith-based values and messaging.

Cameron expressed his disappointment, stating that while he strives to promote library engagement and wholesome reading, the ALA appears to be obstructing his efforts and preventing families from accessing their local libraries. He questions the ALA's commitment to diversity of thought and equal opportunity, particularly concerning faith-based perspectives.

In collaboration with First Liberty, Cameron has initiated an investigation with the federal government to hold the ALA accountable for what they claim is religious discrimination and violation of constitutional rights. Jeremy Dys, senior counsel at First Liberty, echoed Cameron's concerns, criticizing the ALA for allegedly restricting access based on religious beliefs. He argued that such actions by public libraries would be unconstitutional and that taxpayer funds should not support such practices.

Cameron's "See You at the Library" event on August 5th aims to encourage families to participate in book readings and story time at their local libraries. While library rooms are typically available for community events, Cameron expressed concern over an ALA presentation that seemingly advised libraries on how to prevent Brave Books story hours. He highlighted the historical role of libraries as inclusive spaces for diverse viewpoints, including those related to faith and family.

Fox News Digital's attempts to contact the ALA for comment were met with delays due to their annual conference. Cameron and Brave Books pointed to a virtual presentation by ALA leadership, which they interpreted as guidance on obstructing Brave Books events. The presentation reportedly suggested limiting room access to library card holders and prioritizing library-sponsored programs.

Since December 2022, Cameron has toured libraries nationwide, reading from his books "As You Grow" and "Pride Comes Before the Fall." First Liberty's letter to the Institute of Museum and Library Services requests an investigation into the ALA's actions, alleging violations of religious liberty protections and non-discrimination requirements for federal grant recipients. The letter emphasizes the common practice of authors partnering with local communities for book readings and discussions in libraries. It further asserts that the ALA's opposition to Cameron's events stems from his religious beliefs.
