As wildfires ravage California, displacing residents and decimating communities, Matthew Barnett, founder of the LA Dream Center, has stepped up to provide vital support. The Dream Center has become a haven for those seeking refuge, offering food, shelter, and essential supplies to individuals who have lost everything.
In an interview, Barnett described the affected areas as resembling ghost towns, highlighting the urgent need for assistance. The Dream Center is not only providing immediate relief but also addressing long-term needs, recognizing the financial challenges faced by those who have lost their homes. The influx of displaced individuals has created a significant strain on resources, especially in a city like Los Angeles where costs are high.

Barnett, who originally planned a short stint as a pastor, established the Dream Center 30 years ago, transforming a former Catholic Church building into a 24/7 resource center. The facility, once a filming location, now houses 700 residents, including homeless veterans, families, and emancipated minors.

The current relief efforts, which Barnett describes as "COVID times 10," have involved distributing meals provided by renowned chef Wolfgang Puck, among other donations. The Dream Center's 250 volunteers are tirelessly working to provide support, loading trucks and serving food lines for extended hours. Barnett himself is currently displaced, working from his office while his home remains threatened by the fire, further emphasizing his commitment to helping others amidst personal hardship.

Support for the Dream Center's efforts has extended beyond the local community, with celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Florence Pugh, Billie Eilish, Jojo Siwa, and King Bach using their platforms to raise awareness and encourage volunteerism. The Dream Center continues to accept donations of food, baby supplies, clothing, water, and financial contributions both online and in person.
