Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was apprehended in Pennsylvania following a series of investigative developments. Just the night before his arrest, Mangione's mother, Kathleen Mangione, was interviewed by the FBI's Joint Violent Crimes Task Force. This interview stemmed from a tip the FBI received from the San Francisco Police Department, connecting Mangione to a missing person report filed by his family the previous month. The San Francisco police had recognized a resemblance between Mangione and the suspect sought in Thompson's death after reviewing surveillance footage released by the NYPD.
At the time of his arrest at a Pennsylvania McDonald's, Mangione was found in possession of counterfeit identification and a 3D-printed firearm. Authorities believe this firearm is consistent with the shell casings recovered from the scene of Thompson's murder. Mangione now faces a series of charges, including second-degree murder, weapons offenses, and forgery.
Kathleen Mangione had initially reported her son missing on November 18th, stating she hadn't been in contact with him since July and was unsure of his whereabouts. The Mangione family expressed shock and offered condolences to the Thompson family following the arrest.
