New Jersey Judge Faces Scrutiny Over Controversial TikTok Videos

A New Jersey Superior Court Judge, Gary Wilcox, is under investigation following a formal complaint lodged against him for posting allegedly inappropriate videos on TikTok. The videos, posted under the alias "Sal Tortorella," reportedly featured Wilcox lip-syncing to rap songs containing explicit lyrics about violence and sex. The videos were reportedly filmed in various locations, including his courtroom and his bedroom, where he appeared partially clothed.

Wilcox, a Harvard Law School graduate, is said to have uploaded approximately 40 videos to the platform between April 2021 and March 2023. The content of these videos, as detailed in the complaint filed by the state Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct, included profanity and other sensitive subject matter. One video reportedly shows Wilcox in front of law books lip-syncing to a song with violent lyrics. Another depicts him simulating sexually suggestive lyrics.

While Wilcox's TikTok account has since been deleted, it reportedly had amassed around 100 followers. The five-page complaint emphasizes the impropriety of the videos, citing both the explicit nature of the songs and the locations where they were filmed. One video even allegedly shows Wilcox wearing a Beavis and Butthead t-shirt while lip-syncing in the courthouse. The committee asserts that Wilcox displayed poor judgment and a lack of respect for the judiciary, falling short of the high standards expected of judges.

Wilcox has been given 20 days to respond formally to the complaint. Depending on the Advisory Committee's findings, he could face disciplinary actions, potentially including removal from the bench.
