New Jersey Library Moves Controversial Graphic Novel 'Gender Queer' to Adult Section After Public Outcry

Following complaints from community members, the Cedar Grove Library in Essex County, New Jersey, relocated the graphic novel "Gender Queer" from its prominent display during Pride Month to the adult section. The book, known for its explicit depictions of sexual acts, has sparked debate nationwide, particularly regarding its availability to children. While the book remains accessible to all within the library, its previous placement in a display case near the entrance raised concerns from parents about its suitability for young children.

The ACLU of New Jersey criticized the library's decision, urging the director to reject censorship efforts and uphold the First Amendment. They argued that restricting access to books like "Gender Queer" reflects a broader trend of limiting information about LGBTQIA+ issues and human sexuality. Cedar Grove Mayor Kerry Peterson clarified that the book was part of a summer reading kickoff display, making it easily accessible to young children, which prompted the complaints. Peterson emphasized that the book was not banned but simply moved to a more appropriate section.

Local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups expressed concern that the library's action stigmatizes LGBTQ+ youth and implies a double standard compared to materials with heterosexual content. They argue that such decisions contribute to feelings of shame and reinforce the idea that there is something inherently wrong with LGBTQ+ individuals. The American Library Association has listed "Gender Queer" as the most challenged book in recent years, highlighting the ongoing tension between those advocating for its removal and those defending its inclusion in libraries and schools. The NEA's recommendation of the book for teachers' summer reading lists further fueled the controversy. Former President Barack Obama has also weighed in, defending librarians and criticizing book restrictions.
