New York Mets or Yankees: Which Team is More Likely to Miss the Playoffs?

The New York Mets and Yankees entered the 2023 MLB season boasting the league's highest payrolls. Despite significant investments, including the Mets' acquisition of Justin Verlander and the Yankees' re-signing of Aaron Judge and addition of Carlos Rodon, both teams find themselves outside the playoff picture at the All-Star break.

Former Met and Yankee Curtis Granderson, speaking at The Players’ Party, acknowledged the preseason anticipation of a Subway Series but admitted the current reality is far different. With both teams struggling, he believes the Mets face longer odds of reaching the postseason due to their substantial deficit in the NL East.

While the Yankees trail the Toronto Blue Jays by a single game for the final AL Wild Card spot, the Mets face a steeper climb, trailing by seven games in the Wild Card race and a daunting 18.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

The Mets' struggles stem from inconsistent bullpen performances and a middling offense, despite having the highest payroll in baseball. Conversely, the Yankees' pitching has been strong, but their offense has faltered, particularly with Aaron Judge's injury absence since early June.

Although both teams face significant challenges, Granderson retains a sliver of hope for a Subway Series. With half the season remaining, there's still time for either team to turn things around. However, both the Mets and Yankees must address their respective weaknesses to make a playoff push.
