A devastating explosion rocked Paris's Left Bank on Wednesday, causing a building to collapse and leaving at least 50 people injured, six critically. Rescue workers continue to search for one missing person amidst the rubble. The blast occurred near the Val de Grace military hospital in the 5th district, severely damaging a building housing the Paris American Academy, a private fashion and design school. The resulting fire sent plumes of smoke billowing across the city skyline.

While the cause of the explosion remains under investigation, authorities are exploring the possibility of a gas leak. Several of the critically injured individuals suffered severe burns, according to French Health Minister François Braun. While one previously missing person has been located and hospitalized, the search continues for the second individual.

Firefighters are diligently working to clear the debris and search for any additional victims. Paris, with its dense population and historic infrastructure, has experienced similar gas explosions in the past. A 2019 explosion in the 9th district tragically claimed four lives and injured dozens more.
