A Michigan flag planted on the Ohio State logo at midfield appears to have been the catalyst for the fight. Ohio State players reacted swiftly, converging on the Michigan players gathered around the flag. Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer removed and discarded the flag.

Law enforcement officers intervened to quell the escalating situation. Reports and videos circulating on social media suggest that pepper spray was used by officers from both Ohio and Michigan, causing apparent discomfort to players involved. The Ohio State University Police Department confirmed the use of pepper spray in a statement, indicating an ongoing investigation into the incident.

Michigan running back Kalel Mullings expressed his disappointment, characterizing the brawl as detrimental to the sport. He emphasized that the game itself provided ample opportunity for competition and that resorting to physical altercations after the final whistle was unacceptable and reflected poorly on college football. Mullings criticized the behavior as classless and urged for higher standards of conduct.
