The newly launched initiative, called Homewards, is backed by the Royal Foundation and has already provided substantial grants to pilot projects. William highlighted the importance of learning from countries like Finland, which have made significant strides in reducing homelessness, by prioritizing providing permanent housing as a foundation for addressing other challenges.
Homewards comes at a critical time as the UK faces a cost-of-living crisis, exacerbating the challenges of rising rents and a lack of affordable housing. The program aims to address the estimated 300,000 people experiencing homelessness across the UK, encompassing those living on the streets, in temporary accommodations, or relying on the support of family and friends.
In a recent interview, William acknowledged the seeming paradox of his position, given his privilege and ownership of the Duchy of Cornwall, advocating for affordable housing. He confirmed plans to incorporate affordable housing within the Duchy's holdings, demonstrating his commitment to addressing the issue directly.
