Northern Border Security Caucus Seeks Collaboration with Border Czar Tom Homan

Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Ryan Zinke (R-MT), co-chairs of the Northern Border Security Caucus, have reached out to border czar Tom Homan to discuss the increasing security challenges at the U.S.-Canada border. Homan has expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the caucus.

In a letter to Homan, Kelly and Zinke emphasized the often-overlooked security concerns along the northern border, particularly in light of the significant rise in illegal crossings during the previous administration. They highlighted a dramatic increase in encounters, including a staggering 1,720% surge in the Swanton Sector, where a Border Patrol agent was tragically killed in January 2024.

The caucus, comprised of 24 members, aims to bring attention to the escalating immigration issues impacting states bordering Canada. They have invited Homan to meet with them to discuss potential strategies for enhancing security along the northern border. Homan has confirmed his willingness to engage with the caucus promptly to address these concerns, focusing on reducing illegal crossings of both people and narcotics, and bolstering national security.

The caucus, established in 2023 amidst a surge in northern border crossings, has also raised alarms about individuals on the terror watchlist apprehended at the border, noting that a significant percentage of these apprehensions occur at northern ports of entry. In 2023, a new agreement between the U.S. and Canada was implemented to address illegal crossings between official ports of entry, allowing for the return of migrants attempting to enter either country unlawfully.
