Rep. Al Green Removed from Congress During President Trump's Speech

During President Trump's address to a joint session of Congress, several Democratic representatives disrupted the proceedings, despite pleas from party members to maintain decorum. Early in the speech, Rep. Al Green interrupted by shouting and gesturing with his cane, prompting House Speaker Mike Johnson to call for order and eventually direct the Sergeant at Arms to escort Green from the chamber.

Green, a frequent critic of the president, had previously initiated impeachment proceedings against Trump citing concerns related to events in Gaza. Following his removal, Green explained his actions to reporters, stating his disapproval of Trump's assertion of having a mandate and expressing worry about potential Medicaid cuts impacting vulnerable populations. He emphasized his willingness to face any consequences for his protest.

Prior to the speech, some Democrats, including a former senior advisor to Kamala Harris, had cautioned against disruptive behavior. Rep. Melanie Stansbury also engaged in a silent protest, holding a sign deemed critical of Trump, which was subsequently taken by Rep. Lance Gooden.
