Four-year-old Patrick Bresnahan, diagnosed with the rare Timothy syndrome, has found a constant companion and source of strength in his golden retriever service dog, Yammy. Patrick's mother, Susan, a seasoned nurse, noticed early developmental delays in her son, born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. After a challenging diagnostic journey, Patrick received the Timothy syndrome diagnosis at age two.
This rare genetic condition, impacting fewer than 100 individuals globally, affects multiple systems, including the heart, cognitive function, and nervous system. Susan, relieved to finally understand her son's challenges, immediately sought ways to support Patrick's development beyond traditional therapies. A neurologist suggested a service dog, recognizing Patrick's lack of motivation to move.
The Bresnahans partnered with ECAD (Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities) in Connecticut, an organization that meticulously trains service dogs and matches them with individuals based on their unique needs. The family embarked on a fundraising campaign to cover the $25,000 cost, and were overwhelmed by the support they received. After completing a two-week training program, Patrick was paired with Yammy. The impact was almost immediate. Patrick's mobility, confidence, and social interaction blossomed with Yammy by his side.
