Teen Girl Sentenced in Brutal Beating Death of Disabled Man in Washington, D.C.

A 13-year-old girl involved in the fatal beating of 64-year-old Reggie Brown, a disabled man from Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to approximately seven years in prison, meaning she will remain incarcerated until she reaches the age of 21. The sentencing occurred on Wednesday, and the young girl expressed remorse before the court. This marks a significant development in a case that has deeply affected the victim's family and the community.

Brown's sisters expressed their grief and frustration during the sentencing hearing. Malda Brown spoke of her sadness at the brutality displayed by the young girls, while Nasia Israel voiced concerns about the perceived leniency of the juvenile justice system, arguing that repeat offenders are often released without facing adequate consequences for their violent actions. She emphasized the danger these individuals pose to the community and the devastating impact of their crimes.

The incident occurred in October 2023 when five girls, aged 12 to 15, attacked Brown. One of the teen suspects, who had previously pleaded guilty, testified that the group was "bored" and looking for something to do when they assaulted Brown. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a man down on Georgia Avenue in the early hours of October 17, 2023. They found Brown with severe injuries consistent with an assault, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The oldest suspect, a 15-year-old, received a three-year sentence for assault with a dangerous weapon after pleading guilty. She testified that she initiated the attack on Brown, who was described by his family as frail and having recently battled cancer. According to her testimony, the girls encountered an unknown man already assaulting Brown. She claimed to have asked the man if they could join in, and he agreed. They then chased Brown as he tried to escape.
