A Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 met a disastrous end at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday morning, resulting in the loss of 179 lives. The aircraft, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, skidded off the runway and collided with a concrete barrier after its front landing gear reportedly malfunctioned. This incident ranks as one of South Korea's deadliest aviation accidents.
The victims include 84 women, 82 men, and 11 individuals whose genders are yet to be confirmed. Remarkably, two crew members—a man and a woman—survived the crash and are expected to recover. They were rescued from the tail section, which remained relatively intact amidst the otherwise unrecognizable wreckage.
One survivor, currently in intensive care, is being treated for fractures to his ribs, shoulder blade, and spine. The plane, returning from Thailand, crashed at approximately 9:07 a.m. local time. Images from the scene depict thick smoke billowing from the wreckage.
Authorities have recovered the flight data recorder and are searching for the cockpit voice recorder to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.
