The University of Vermont dismissed men's hockey coach Todd Woodcroft following an internal investigation into what the university deemed "inappropriate" text message exchanges with a student. The investigation stemmed from a complaint lodged against Woodcroft in March, culminating in his termination on Tuesday.
While the university refrained from disclosing specifics about the text messages, they confirmed that the investigation revealed no further allegations or evidence of misconduct beyond the text exchanges.

During the investigation, Woodcroft was instructed to avoid contact with any students involved and worked remotely, though he was not officially placed on leave. Athletic Director Jeff Schulman stated that Woodcroft's actions did not meet the university's standards for coach conduct. Schulman characterized the communications as "inappropriate text messages with a UVM student on multiple occasions that failed to maintain professional boundaries."

Schulman emphasized the high expectations the athletic department holds for its coaches, especially head coaches, who serve as mentors and role models for student-athletes.
Woodcroft's attorney, Andrew Miltenberg, expressed strong disagreement with the university's findings and process, citing concerns about fairness and due process. He indicated their intention to pursue legal action on Woodcroft's behalf.

Woodcroft held a 20-55-9 record over three seasons with the Catamounts. His career also includes experience as an assistant coach in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets and as a scout for various teams, including the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings.
