Bobby Orr Defends Wayne Gretzky Amidst Criticism Over Trump Association

Hockey icon Bobby Orr penned an op-ed in the Toronto Sun, staunchly defending Wayne Gretzky against recent criticism stemming from Gretzky's perceived support of former President Donald Trump. Gretzky faced backlash after being named honorary captain for Team Canada during the 4 Nations final. Much of the disapproval originated from Gretzky's presence at a Trump victory celebration in Florida following the 2024 presidential election, as well as his attendance at Trump's inauguration in January.

Orr expressed disappointment over the negativity directed towards Gretzky, whom he regards as one of the greatest Canadians. He emphasized that respecting individual political beliefs is crucial. Orr highlighted Gretzky's extensive charitable contributions to Canadians throughout his career and beyond, urging the public to show grace and respect.

Gretzky himself has remained silent on the issue of Trump's support. Trump previously mentioned at a Mar-a-Lago press conference that he had jokingly offered Gretzky the governorship of Canada, a position Gretzky reportedly wasn't interested in. Trump also alluded to the possibility of Canadian statehood, a comment made in jest.
