A New York couple's dream of homeownership has quickly devolved into a stressful ordeal due to a persistent squatter refusing to leave their newly acquired property. Ryan Folts and Caitlin Pitts purchased the Rochester home at a foreclosure auction in January, aware of an occupant. However, the situation escalated beyond their expectations.
Folts recounted a chilling encounter where he offered the squatter $500 per month to stay, only to receive a death threat in return. Despite navigating the legal procedures for eviction, the couple remains locked out of their own home.

"We've exhausted all legal avenues to have him removed, yet he's still squatting," Folts stated. He further explained that attempts to involve the Rochester Police proved futile, with officers reportedly declining to intervene, citing a lack of legal authority to execute evictions without a court order.

Having already sold their previous residence and anticipating the move, Folts and Pitts are now burdened with mounting hotel and storage unit expenses. Pitts expressed their frustration, questioning why they are facing such hardship despite following proper procedures. She emphasized the squatter's alleged mental health issues and criminal behavior, including burglary, trespassing, and threats, urging for intervention.
The couple expressed doubt about ever feeling safe enough to live in the home, even if the squatter is eventually evicted, and are considering selling the property if possible.
