Do you ever find yourself mindlessly munching on a bag of potato chips, especially when stressed? There's a scientific reason for this. Stress hormones like cortisol can trigger cravings for comfort foods, especially those high in salt and sugar, offering a temporary escape from negative emotions, explains psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert.
While indulging occasionally isn't harmful, consistently reaching for chips can have negative health consequences. Wellness expert Jacob Zemer points out that the issue isn't potatoes themselves, but the frying process, which creates a combination of fat and carbohydrates detrimental to health. This combination, along with the added salt, makes chips "highly palatable," contributing to overconsumption.
Zemer suggests seeking alternatives that are both satisfying and nutritious. He recommends looking for snacks that pass the "protein test": at least 10 grams of protein per 100 calories. Two brands he favors are Quest Chips and Legendary Chips. High-fiber snacks are also beneficial, promoting a feeling of fullness and reducing the likelihood of overeating.

Zemer also recommends "single-ingredient" foods like edamame, which can be seasoned with salt for a healthy, satisfying crunch. He suggests a high-protein, high-fiber pretzel alternative available at Costco called Crisp Power.

Zemer offers three key tips for transitioning to healthier snacking habits:
- Find healthy substitutes: Identify snacks that satisfy your salt cravings without the unhealthy aspects of chips.
- Eliminate unhealthy options: Remove tempting, unhealthy snacks from your home to avoid temptation.
- Be persistent: Taste buds regenerate approximately every 30 days, so even if you don't initially enjoy a healthier alternative, your preferences can change over time.
