Husband Sues Safari Company After Tragic Hippo Attack Claims Wife's Life in Zambia

A New Jersey man has filed a lawsuit against a Connecticut-based safari tour operator following the tragic death of his wife during a guided walking tour in Zambia last year. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of African Portfolio, claiming they failed to ensure the couple's safety during the excursion.

Craig Manders, 72, witnessed the horrifying incident as a hippopotamus, partially submerged in a river, suddenly charged his wife, Lisa, 70. The animal grabbed her, shook her violently, and inflicted fatal injuries. The lawsuit contends that the armed guide accompanying the couple fled the scene during the attack.

The lawsuit argues that African Portfolio should have recognized the inherent danger of approaching the riverbank near a wild hippo and adequately warned the couple. It further states that the Manders were not fully aware of the risks involved. Craig Manders is seeking damages of at least $15,000 for funeral expenses and other costs.

African Portfolio's attorney, Rodney Gould, maintains that the company only arranged the couple's lodging, while the actual tour was operated by Chiawa Safaris, the lodge owners in Zambia. Gould stated that Chiawa Safaris reported that a highly trained guide, a ranger, and an armed scout accompanied the Manders. He added that Chiawa Safaris confirmed to authorities that all safety protocols were followed and verbal warnings were issued before and during the incident, urging the guests to return to their vehicle. Gould emphasized African Portfolio's support for the family following the tragedy.
